Dr Stephen Senanu Akiti, a Dzolalian and co-founder of CLITH has been named among the top ten students in his school, bestowing on him the rarest prestige of being the only non-Chinese on this year’s list. This unique opportunity comes once every two years and is one of the highest-rated conferments in the medical college.

The top ten students were considered for their academic work, research papers published, clinical work, humanitarian work and leadership capacity. This year’s award was launched in April and swiftly received college and departmental recommendations, written reviews and on-site selection requests. 15 students were presented to expert judges and a public jury with more than 200 lecturers and students alike playing a role in the entire selection process. The final list was released on 14th May 2021.

Wenzhou Medical University is one of China’s top medical colleges located in Zhejiang province with a student population of about 14,000 diverse people from many different countries who are both studying to become fresh doctors or specialising in one physiological niche or the other.
Stephen was born and bred in Accra and went to Newland basic school in Ashaiman and later to Keta Senior High school in the Volta region between 2004 and 2007. He joined the Shenyang medical college immediately after high school where he was baked into one of the best young medical doctors you would meet. After a short time in Ghana, working as a junior doctor at the 37 Military Hospital and a dedicated humanitarian run with about 200 diverse health professionals in rural Ghana through CLITH, a health non-profit organisation he co-founded, Stephen returned to China in 2019 where he is undergoing an advance and intensive three-year Ophthalmology program.

Dr Akiti enjoys discovering the history of new cultures and socialisations which yield happy, positive relationships. He believes that change starts with an individual and our contribution to the world starts with our contribution to self-development, impacting younger ones and helping the less privileged in our communities. Hard work is a noble and honourable virtue.
Congratulations Dr Akiti, we are proud of you.
